What is FedEx Standard Overnight?

FedEx Standard Overnight delivers the next business day by 5:00 p.m. to U.S. businesses and by 8 p.m. to residences. It runs Monday through Friday, so an order that ships Friday arrives Monday unless you pay for Saturday delivery to an eligible address. If you sell online, the promise you can safely attach to it is "by the end of the next business day," not a morning arrival.

It is the latest-arriving of FedEx's three domestic overnight services. FedEx Priority Overnight commits to 10:30 a.m. at most businesses and noon at most residences, and FedEx First Overnight arrives between 8 and 9:30 a.m. If a package has to be there in the morning, Standard Overnight is the wrong tier. Our guide to FedEx Priority Overnight covers the mid-morning option in detail.

Delivery is available throughout the United States, but deliveries to and from select ZIP codes in Alaska and Hawaii may differ from the times above. For the exact commitment to a specific address, use the FedEx rate finder, which shows transit times to your delivery area.

Does FedEx Standard Overnight deliver on Saturday?

Yes, as a paid add-on. Saturday delivery for Standard Overnight is by 5 p.m. to most areas in the contiguous U.S., and FedEx charges extra for it.

Saturday pickup and Saturday delivery are two different add-ons. Pickup means FedEx collects the package from you on a Saturday. Delivery means it reaches the recipient on a Saturday. For its overnight services, FedEx offers both: shipments can be picked up and delivered on Saturday in many areas for an additional charge. When you book, check which one you are adding.

If nobody will be at the address, Saturday hold at location is free. The recipient collects the package from a FedEx location instead of waiting for a weekend delivery. Our FedEx Hold at Location guide explains how to set it up and what ID the recipient needs.

Dropping a shipment off at a FedEx retail location on Saturday also carries no additional charge, but cutoff times and Saturday drop-off availability vary by location, so confirm with the store before you count on it.

No FedEx overnight service delivers on Sunday. On the FedEx weekend delivery page, Sunday delivery is listed only for FedEx Home Delivery and FedEx SameDay.

Where Standard Overnight is available

"All 50 states" comes with a catch. Standard Overnight is available in all 50 states, but only to addresses where the FedEx Priority Overnight delivery commitment is by 10:30 a.m. or noon. That is a rule about the individual address, not the state, so it can rule out a destination anywhere in the country. Check the address in the rate finder before you promise next-day delivery to it.

Is FedEx Standard Overnight guaranteed?

Yes, under the current policy. Effective Feb. 12, 2026, the FedEx Money-Back Guarantee applies to FedEx First Overnight, Priority Overnight, Standard Overnight and 2Day A.M. for U.S. payors, along with the contract Extra Hours versions of the overnight services. The guarantee for all other FedEx services remains suspended until further notice, so a late FedEx Ground or FedEx Home Delivery package is not covered.

Treat this as a policy that moves. FedEx suspended the guarantee for these domestic overnight services for packages shipped on or after Dec. 1, 2025, reinstated it for packages shipped on or after Jan. 13, 2026, and restated it in the Feb. 12, 2026 policy. Re-read the money-back guarantee page before you promise a customer a refund on a late package. The remedy is a refund or credit under the terms of the FedEx Service Guide, and there are exceptions, such as shipments delayed by regulatory changes.

Does FedEx Standard Overnight require a signature?

It depends on the shipment. Some shippers require a signature when they create the label, and FedEx typically collects one for commercial deliveries or where the declared value exceeds certain thresholds. Many shipments can be released without a signature. If you are the shipper and want proof of delivery, choose a signature option when you create the label rather than assuming one will be collected.

If you are waiting on a package, tracking on fedex.com shows its current status. If you do not have the tracking number, see how to track a FedEx package without a tracking number.

Which FedEx overnight service do you need?

  • Choose FedEx Standard Overnight when arrival by the end of the next business day is enough: 5:00 p.m. for businesses, 8 p.m. for residences. FedEx positions it as its more cost-effective next-day option.
  • Choose FedEx Priority Overnight when the package has to be there by mid-morning: 10:30 a.m. to most businesses, noon to most residences.
  • Choose FedEx First Overnight when it has to be there before the workday starts, by 8 to 9:30 a.m. to most areas.
  • If the package does not need to arrive next day, an overnight tier is the wrong comparison. Our guide to FedEx Ground Economy covers FedEx's deferred ground option, and if you also ship USPS, our comparison of Priority Mail and Priority Mail Express covers the USPS side.

Two practical details for shippers. FedEx packaging is free with its overnight services, in 12 options, though not for FedEx Ground or FedEx Home Delivery. And the latest drop-off time for overnight shipping varies by location, so call the store to confirm the cutoff; a package dropped after it is not delivered the next day.

What this means for the promise you make at checkout

A next-day promise built on Standard Overnight only holds for orders that leave before your carrier cutoff on a weekday, to an address the service covers. At Simpl, orders received before 12pm CT ship the same day. If you would rather not manage carrier cutoffs and service selection in-house, see our ecommerce fulfillment service.
