How to use the USPS zone lookup

Step 1 — Enter your origin ZIP. This is the ZIP Code you ship from: your warehouse, your home, or your 3PL’s fulfillment center. Zones are measured from the origin, so this is the number that anchors the result.

Step 2 — Enter the destination ZIP. Use the ZIP Code the order is going to. The tool measures the distance band between the two points.

Step 3 — Read the zone. You’ll get the USPS-style zone — Zone 1 for local, up to Zone 8 for cross-country, plus Zone 9 for territories and certain military routing — along with the distance band behind it. Use that to estimate postage before you buy a label.

Why zones matter for ecommerce shipping

USPS zones are origin-based. A customer in New York is a different zone from Austin than from Dallas, Los Angeles, or Chicago. That changes postage, delivery expectations, and the math behind free shipping.

Origin ZIP changes everything

Zones are calculated from the shipment origin, so a second warehouse or prep location can reshape your cost profile even when the customer mix stays the same.

Higher zones usually cost more

Zoned services generally get more expensive as packages travel farther. Weight, dimensions, and service level still matter, but zone is one of the first levers to understand.

Useful before the exact quote

Use this as planning math for free-shipping thresholds, marketplace margins, subscription boxes, and SKU launches. Use live carrier rating for final postage decisions.

Understanding the USPS zone bands

USPS sorts every domestic shipment into a zone based on the distance between the origin and destination ZIP Codes. The zone tracks distance, not state lines.

  • Zone 1 covers the shortest hauls, roughly within 50 miles of the origin.
  • Zones 2 through 4 cover regional shipments, growing from a few hundred miles to around 600.
  • Zones 5 through 7 are longer cross-region hauls, from about 600 to 1,800 miles.
  • Zone 8 covers the longest domestic distances, more than 1,800 miles — coast to coast.
  • Zone 9 covers US territories and some military (APO/FPO/DPO) destinations.

Because the bands widen as packages travel farther, a Zone 8 shipment usually costs more than a Zone 2 shipment of the same weight and size on the same service.

How zones change your shipping math

If most of your customers sit in high zones from your warehouse, your average shipping cost climbs — even when your product and packaging never change. That matters when you set a free-shipping threshold, price a subscription box, or quote a wholesale order. Knowing your zone mix up front keeps those decisions from quietly eating your margin.

Two levers help. The first is origin: shipping from a location closer to your customers pulls more orders into lower zones. The second is packaging and service selection, which decide how much that distance actually costs. A zone estimate is the starting point; live carrier rates are the final word before you buy postage.

USPS zone map FAQs

What are USPS shipping zones?
USPS shipping zones are distance bands used by zoned USPS services. The origin ZIP Code matters, so the same destination can be a different zone from a different warehouse.
Is this an official USPS rate quote?
No. This tool estimates the USPS-style zone from ZIP geocoding and domestic distance bands. Use an official USPS or postage-provider rating tool before charging a customer or buying postage.
Why did the old USPS map stop working?
The old embedded map used USPS Web Tools APIs from the browser. USPS retired that Web Tools path in January 2026, so the legacy iframe could no longer return live zone results.
Do all USPS services use zones?
No. Some services and flat-rate packaging do not price the same way. Zones matter most when a USPS service varies by distance, weight, package type, and destination.
Can Simpl reduce high-zone shipping costs?
Simpl helps brands plan packaging, carrier selection, and fulfillment workflows from our Austin, TX warehouse. For many sellers, the biggest win is knowing the zone mix before building free-shipping thresholds or subscription pricing.
How many USPS shipping zones are there?
USPS uses Zones 1 through 9 for domestic shipping. Zones 1 to 8 are distance bands within the contiguous US, from local (Zone 1) to coast-to-coast (Zone 8). Zone 9 covers US territories and certain military destinations. The zone you get depends entirely on the origin and destination ZIP Codes.
