USPS Ground Advantage and USPS Priority Mail do the same thing: get your package from point A to point B with tracking and insurance. Both work across all 50 states and territories. The difference comes down to what you're shipping, where it's going, and how much you want to pay.

Ground Advantage pricing is based on weight, size, and distance. A small package shipped within your region will cost a fraction of what the same package costs going cross-country. Delivery takes two to five business days, and you get tracking and return shipping at lower rates than Priority Mail.
| Weight | Zone 1–2 | Zone 5 | Zone 8 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Up to 4 oz | $5.09 | — | — |
| Up to 8 oz | $5.58 | $4.20 | $5.45 |
| 1 lb | $7.05 | $6.70 | $10.10 |
| 3 lb | — | $9.90 | $15.25 |
| 5 lb | $8.36 | $12.85 | $20.15 |
| 10 lb | $11.22 | — | — |
Rates increase with distance (zone) and weight. For lighter packages shipping regionally, Ground Advantage is almost always the cheaper option.
Priority Mail is the flat-rate option. Pick a USPS flat rate box or envelope, and the price stays the same regardless of where it's going. Shipping small toys in a small box? You pay the same from New York to New Jersey as you would from New York to Texas. The package just has to be under 70 pounds and fit in their standardized packaging. Delivery runs one to three business days.
| Package | Retail | Commercial |
|---|---|---|
| Flat Rate Envelope | $11.95 | $10.30 |
| Padded Flat Rate Envelope | $12.95 | $11.10 |
| Small Flat Rate Box | $12.65 | $11.20 |
| Medium Flat Rate Box | $22.95 | $19.60 |
| Large Flat Rate Box | $31.50 | $28.70 |
No zone math. Same price whether it's going 50 miles or 3,000. Priority Mail also has weight-based pricing if you use your own packaging, but those rates run higher than Ground Advantage at the same weight and zone.
| Scenario | Best Option | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 8 oz subscription box, mostly local customers | Ground Advantage | ~$5.58 commercial vs $10.30+ for Priority |
| 5 lb product shipping coast-to-coast | Priority Mail Flat Rate | Medium flat rate box at $19.60 beats Ground Advantage's $20.15 for Zone 8 |
| Heavy, dense item under 70 lbs | Priority Mail Flat Rate | Flat rate ignores weight — stuff the box |
| Lightweight items under 1 lb | Ground Advantage | Starts at $5.09 commercial, roughly half the cost of Priority |
| Customer expects 1–2 day delivery | Priority Mail | Averages 1.4 days locally vs Ground Advantage's 1.9 days |
| Oversized package (over 108" L+G) | Ground Advantage | Priority Mail caps at 108", Ground Advantage allows up to 130" |
Three questions: How heavy is it? How far is it going? How fast does it need to get there?
Ground Advantage wins on price for lightweight, regional shipments. Priority Mail wins for heavier items going long distances, or when your customer is paying for speed. Most ecommerce brands end up using both depending on the order.

For packages under 1 lb shipping within a few zones, yes — often by 40–50%. But for heavier packages going cross-country, Priority Mail flat rate boxes can actually be cheaper since they ignore distance.
Officially 2–5 business days. In practice, local shipments (Zones 1–2) average about 2 days, while coast-to-coast (Zone 8) averages closer to 5 days.
Yes. Priority Mail offers both flat rate (USPS-provided boxes) and weight-based pricing with your own packaging. The flat rate option is only available with USPS flat rate boxes and envelopes.
Yes. Both include free tracking and $100 of insurance coverage, with up to $5,000 of additional coverage available for purchase.
Most use both. Ground Advantage for everyday lightweight orders, Priority Mail for heavier items or when customers pay for faster shipping. If you are working with a 3PL, they will typically pick the cheapest option per order automatically.
