The short answer
Yes. Pirate Ship is a real web-based service for buying USPS and UPS shipping labels, and the software is free to use. Its pricing page says there are no markups, fees or minimums and that you pay only for the labels you buy (checked October 11, 2026). Postage, any carrier adjustments after shipping, packaging and your own packing time are separate costs.
Whether a Pirate Ship label beats your other options depends on the parcel's weight and size, the service and how far it travels. Once you are packing more orders than you have time for, the label price stops being the number that decides your costs.
A note on who wrote this. Simpl Fulfillment is a 3PL in Austin, Texas: we store inventory and pack and ship orders for ecommerce brands, so we are one of the options a growing Pirate Ship user might compare. Each Pirate Ship detail below links to Pirate Ship's own pages or the review site it came from, with the date we checked it.
Is Pirate Ship free?
The software is. Pirate Ship's pricing page says the service has no markups, fees, minimums or hidden costs, and the only thing you pay for is your labels (checked October 11, 2026).
Labels are not a fixed price. The pricing page says USPS labels come with USPS Commercial Pricing as soon as you open an account and UPS labels come at discounted rates (checked October 11, 2026). USPS's own Notice 123 price list shows those prices change with the service, the weight and the zone (effective October 4, 2026; checked October 10, 2026).
So "free" describes the software. It does not cover postage, carrier adjustments, boxes and mailers, or the time it takes you to pack.
How does Pirate Ship make money?
Pirate Ship answers this in its help center: it says it makes money "through our official partnerships with USPS® and UPS®," like other shipping software companies, and that it runs lean enough to live on that partnership income without charging customers fees (page dated June 7, 2026; checked October 11, 2026).
That help article does not say how the partnership income is calculated (checked October 11, 2026). On your side, the bill is labels only, and the software has no subscription fee.
Pirate Ship fees: labels and carrier adjustments
Your label price is set when you buy it, based on the weight, dimensions, service and addresses you enter. The carriers then check the parcel in their own networks.
Pirate Ship's carrier adjustments article says USPS runs parcels through its Automated Package Verification system and charges or credits your account if the weight, dimensions, service, package type or ZIP codes do not match what you paid for (checked October 11, 2026).
For UPS, Pirate Ship's adjustments article says UPS checks weight, dimensions and zones too, and can add surcharges such as Saturday Delivery, Additional Handling and Extended Area (checked October 11, 2026).
Pirate Ship's adjustments article says these charges come from the carriers, not from Pirate Ship, and that you can dispute them within 60 days of a USPS notice or 120 days of a UPS notice; USPS typically takes up to 15 business days to decide and UPS about a week, and an approved dispute is credited back to your account (checked October 11, 2026).
Weigh and measure every box before you buy the label. If you drop parcels off instead of scheduling a pickup, ask for a drop-off receipt: Pirate Ship's adjustments article says the receipt shows the weight the carrier scanned, which you can use as evidence in a dispute (checked October 11, 2026).
Size counts as much as weight for big, light boxes. Since July 12, 2026, USPS compares actual weight with dimensional weight for parcels over 1,728 cubic inches on Priority Mail Express, Priority Mail, Ground Advantage and Parcel Select, and for an ordinary rectangular box it rounds each side up to a whole inch and divides the cubic inches by 139, according to Postal Bulletin 22705 (checked October 10, 2026). Odd-shaped parcels follow service-specific rules.
Is Pirate Ship cheaper than USPS?
Pirate Ship sells USPS postage, so the comparison that helps is between USPS's own price lists. USPS publishes separate retail and commercial price schedules, and its current Notice 123 lists both (effective October 4, 2026; checked October 10, 2026). Retail prices are the ones charged at a Post Office counter.
Pirate Ship's pricing page says its USPS labels come with Commercial Pricing (checked October 11, 2026). To see what that saves you, look up the same service, weight and zone in both columns of Notice 123 (checked October 10, 2026). We have not put a sample saving here, because it changes with every one of those inputs.
USPS also has temporary holiday prices in effect. The USPS announcement says they took effect October 4 on Priority Mail Express, Priority Mail, USPS Ground Advantage and Parcel Select and stay in place until midnight Central on January 17, 2027 (checked October 11, 2026). A comparison you run before then reflects holiday pricing.
For UPS, the pricing page says you get discounted rates (checked October 11, 2026). If you already have UPS rates you negotiated yourself, price a few of your real parcels both ways before you switch.
Pirate Ship reviews: what users say
When we checked on October 10, 2026, Pirate Ship's Trustpilot profile showed 4.7 out of 5 from 1,395 reviews. On October 11, 2026, its Shopify App Store listing showed 4.9 out of 5 from 185 reviews, and that rating covers the Shopify app only.
Both are star ratings from people who chose to leave a review. Neither measures delivery speed, damage or how often carrier adjustments happen.
Recent reviews on Pirate Ship's Trustpilot profile mention unexpected dimension or surcharge adjustments after shipping, frustration with disputing those adjustments, and trouble getting lost-package claims resolved (read October 10, 2026). Other reviewers on the same profile describe winning a dispute or getting quick help from support. The reviews do not show how common either experience is.
What Pirate Ship does and does not do
Pirate Ship sells USPS and UPS labels. For international parcels it also offers Simple Export Rate, and its carrier availability article names Asendia as the carrier for that service (checked October 11, 2026). If you ship with FedEx or DHL, check Pirate Ship's current carrier options before you switch.
Pirate Ship's carrier availability article says UPS services are not available for hazmat shipments on Pirate Ship, so declared hazardous materials can only go USPS, within postal rules (checked October 11, 2026).
Its integrations list connects to Big Cartel, BigCommerce, Cratejoy, Discogs, eBay, Ecwid, PayPal, Shopify, Subbly, Square, Squarespace, Wix and WooCommerce, plus spreadsheet upload, and says Big Cartel, Ecwid and Squarespace need a paid plan on that platform (page dated June 9, 2026; checked October 11, 2026). After you buy a label, the integrations list says Pirate Ship marks the order shipped with tracking in your store (checked October 11, 2026).
Etsy and Amazon are not on Pirate Ship's integrations list, which suggests spreadsheet upload or pasting addresses one at a time for platforms it does not connect to (checked October 11, 2026).
There is no phone line. Pirate Ship's support page says help comes by live chat or email, seven days a week from 7 AM to 9 PM Pacific (page dated August 26, 2026; checked October 11, 2026).
And it is a label tool, not a warehouse. Pirate Ship's drop-off guide says that once you buy and print postage and put it on your package, you hand the parcel to USPS or UPS by drop-off or pickup (checked October 11, 2026). Storing stock, picking and packing stay with you.
When self-fulfilling with Pirate Ship still makes sense
If you have the time to pack and the room to store stock, Pirate Ship plus your own packing table is a low-cost setup: the software is free and you control every box. To see what it really costs you, add up one month:
- Labels: what you spent on labels, plus carrier adjustments, minus any credits.
- Packaging: boxes, mailers, tape, fill and label stock.
- Packing time: the hours spent picking, packing and dropping off parcels, times what an hour of your time is worth.
- Storage: the space your inventory takes up, whether that is a spare room or a rented unit.
Divide the total by the orders you shipped that month and you have your real cost per order. Compare that number with a 3PL, not the label price alone. A 3PL charges for the packing work you would stop doing, and some, Simpl included, put postage inside the per-order price too.
Self-fulfilling vs a 3PL at 150, 400 and 1,000 orders a month
Here is how the costs line up at three order levels. The Pirate Ship cells are yours to fill in, because label prices depend on your parcels and where they go.
Monthly cost | 150 orders | 400 orders | 1,000 orders |
|---|---|---|---|
Pirate Ship software | $0 | $0 | $0 |
Pirate Ship labels and carrier adjustments | Your average label cost × 150 | Your average label cost × 400 | Your average label cost × 1,000 |
Packaging and your packing time (self-fulfilling) | Your cost | Your cost | Your cost |
Simpl at the $7/order starting price (includes postage, packaging and packing) | $1,050 + storage | $2,800 + storage | $7,000 + storage |
The Simpl row multiplies each order count by the published starting price of $7/order. It is a lower-bound illustration, not a quote or a guaranteed rate: actual per-order charges vary with weight and service, and our usual billed average is about $7–8 per order. Storage is billed on top by bin, shelf or pallet.
How Simpl compares, and when to keep shipping yourself
Simpl stores your inventory in a single warehouse in Austin, Texas, and picks, packs and ships each order with UPS, USPS or FedEx. Pricing starts at $7/order and covers postage, packaging, packing and up to three picks. Storage is $3 per small bin, $5 per large bin, $15 per shelf or $40 per pallet each month.
There is a $750 monthly minimum, billed pay-the-difference: if your orders bill less than $750 in a month, you pay only the gap. Because postage sits inside the per-order price, that works out to roughly 90 to 100 orders a month, depending on weight and service. Contracts run three months, renew automatically and need 60 days' notice to end. Brands shipping 5,000+ orders a month get custom pricing.
If you ship well under that minimum, keep self-fulfilling with a label tool like Pirate Ship for now. When your real cost per order from the math above gets close to a 3PL's all-in price, or packing takes the hours you need for the rest of the business, get a quote.
For a side-by-side of the two services, see Simpl Fulfillment vs Pirate Ship. To check the USPS zones your parcels travel, use our USPS zone map.
