When Does USPS Not Deliver?

USPS has no regular mail delivery on Sundays or on 11 postal holidays a year. Regular delivery runs Monday through Saturday, and mail that would have arrived on a holiday moves to the next delivery day. The dates below come from the USPS holidays page; the rules behind them are the legal public holidays in 5 U.S.C. 6103, which USPS observes.

The 11 days with no regular USPS delivery in 2026

1. New Year's Day: Thursday, January 1, 2026. Fixed date, January 1.
2. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day: Monday, January 19, 2026. Third Monday of January.
3. Presidents Day (Washington's Birthday in the statute): Monday, February 16, 2026. Third Monday of February.
4. Memorial Day: Monday, May 25, 2026. Last Monday of May.
5. Juneteenth: Friday, June 19, 2026. Fixed date, June 19.
6. Independence Day: Saturday, July 4, 2026. Fixed date, July 4.
7. Labor Day: Monday, September 7, 2026. First Monday of September.
8. Columbus Day: Monday, October 12, 2026. Second Monday of October.
9. Veterans Day: Wednesday, November 11, 2026. Fixed date, November 11.
10. Thanksgiving Day: Thursday, November 26, 2026. Fourth Thursday of November.
11. Christmas Day: Friday, December 25, 2026. Fixed date, December 25.

Two of these rules are easy to get wrong. Presidents Day has no fixed February date; it moves with the third Monday. Memorial Day is the last Monday of May, not the fourth. In 2026 those are the same day, but May 2027 has five Mondays, so the two rules give different dates that year.

There is no postal holiday in March, April or August. That leaves two long stretches with no closure at all: Presidents Day to Memorial Day, and Independence Day to Labor Day.

The day of week matters as much as the date. Five of the eleven fall on a Monday, so each one pairs with the Sunday before it and leaves a two-day gap in regular delivery. The two Fridays, Juneteenth and Christmas Day, leave Saturday as the only regular delivery day between the closure and the following Sunday. The day after Thanksgiving is not on the list, so Friday, November 27 is a regular delivery day.

When a holiday falls on a Saturday

Independence Day 2026 falls on a Saturday. USPS says post offices "will be open on Friday, July 3, and deliveries will occur as normal," so Saturday, July 4 is the closed day. The same note says some USPS employees get the Friday as a holiday for pay and leave purposes; that doesn't change when mail moves.

Expected USPS holidays in 2027

USPS hasn't posted its 2027 table yet. These dates follow from the same rules as the 2026 list; confirm them on the USPS holidays page once it's up.

1. New Year's Day: Friday, January 1, 2027.
2. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day: Monday, January 18, 2027.
3. Presidents Day: Monday, February 15, 2027.
4. Memorial Day: Monday, May 31, 2027. May 2027 has five Mondays, so the last Monday is a week after the fourth.
5. Juneteenth: Saturday, June 19, 2027.
6. Independence Day: Sunday, July 4, 2027, expected to be observed on Monday, July 5.
7. Labor Day: Monday, September 6, 2027.
8. Columbus Day: Monday, October 11, 2027.
9. Veterans Day: Thursday, November 11, 2027.
10. Thanksgiving Day: Thursday, November 25, 2027. Friday, November 26 is a regular delivery day.
11. Christmas Day: Saturday, December 25, 2027.

Three of these land on a weekend, which is where 2027 differs from 2026. Juneteenth and Christmas Day are Saturdays. If USPS handles them the way it handles July 4, 2026, expect normal delivery on Friday, June 18 and Friday, December 24, with the Saturday itself closed. Independence Day is a Sunday, when there is no regular delivery anyway. A federal holiday that falls on a Sunday is observed on the following Monday under Executive Order 11582, as OPM explains, and USPS listed Monday, July 5 as its closure the last time July 4 fell on a Sunday, in 2021. So the expected no-delivery day is Monday, July 5, 2027. Put July 5 in your calendar, not July 4.

Priority Mail Express on Sundays and holidays

The closures above apply to regular mail, not to every package. The USPS delayed-mail FAQ says: "Priority Mail Express mailpieces and Amazon parcels are the only pieces of mail delivered on Sunday." What a closure does to a package in transit

For a shipper, the useful question is how each service standard absorbs a closure. The same USPS FAQ lists the standards: Priority Mail Express 1 to 3 calendar days, guaranteed; Priority Mail 2 to 3 business days; First-Class Mail 1 to 5 business days; USPS Ground Advantage 2 to 5 business days. Only Priority Mail Express is guaranteed.

Priority Mail Express is also the only standard written in calendar days. The others are business-day standards, and a Monday closure removes one delivery day from that week. USPS doesn't publish a per-holiday adjustment to those ranges, so the safe message to a customer is the full range counted after the closure, not a promise of "one day late."

Two examples from 2026. A USPS Ground Advantage package accepted on Friday, May 22 still has Saturday, May 23 as a regular delivery day. Memorial Day then closes Monday, May 25, so after Saturday the next regular delivery day is Tuesday, May 26. Juneteenth on Friday, June 19, followed by Sunday, June 21, leaves Saturday, June 20 as the only delivery day in that three-day window.

If a promised delivery date sits on or just after a closure, move the ship date earlier by at least the number of closed days. Christmas gets planned for. The dates to watch are the quieter closures, such as Juneteenth in June and Veterans Day, which falls on a Wednesday in 2026.

Planning around the calendar

Add the remaining 2026 dates to your shipping calendar and pencil in the expected 2027 dates until USPS confirms them. For the fixed-date holidays, check the day of the week: a Saturday holiday like July 4, 2026 behaves differently from a Monday one, and a Sunday holiday like July 4, 2027 moves the closure to the Monday.
