FedEx Box Sizes: Dimensions, Weight Limits and One Rate Prices

FedEx offers eight sizes of branded packaging for US shipments, complimentary when you ship with its expedited services: the FedEx Envelope, Pak, Extra Small Box, Small Box, Medium Box, Large Box, Extra Large Box and Tube. Every dimension and price in the chart below comes from FedEx's One Rate page (rates effective February 2, 2026, checked September 22, 2026), listed in inches first with centimeters in parentheses. FedEx box sizes chart

Small, Medium, Large and Extra Large each come in two shapes, and FedEx publishes both. For Small, Medium and Large, the second shape is the deeper box. Extra Large works the other way, with a second shape that is wider and shallower. Measure the thinnest side of your item before you pick. The price column is the FedEx One Rate list rate for FedEx 2Day, rates effective February 2, 2026 (checked September 22, 2026); overnight services cost more.

Envelopes and Paks have a thickness rule. If a One Rate Envelope measures more than 3 inches (7.6 cm) on its shortest side, or a Pak more than 5 inches (12.7 cm), FedEx rates the shipment as a One Rate box based on its cubic volume.

Which FedEx box to use

Start with the thinnest dimension of the item, because that is where the two shapes of each box differ:

• Small Box: 1-1/2" (3.8 cm) deep in the flat shape, 2-5/8" (6.7 cm) in the deeper one.
• Medium Box: 2-3/8" (6 cm) or 4-3/8" (11.1 cm).
• Large Box: 3" (7.6 cm) or 7-3/4" (19.7 cm).
• Extra Large Box: 11" (27.9 cm) in the near-cube shape, 6" (15.2 cm) in the wide flat one.

The deeper Small, Medium and Large boxes share the same 8-3/4" x 11-1/4" (22.2 x 28.6 cm) footprint. An item that fits that footprint fits all three, and only the depth changes, which makes it easy to step up a size without re-measuring. The Extra Small Box, at 7-1/4" x 2-1/2" x 4-11/16" (18.4 x 6.4 x 11.9 cm), is the smallest box in the lineup. FedEx's US One Rate page lists one set of dimensions per box without labeling them inside or outside, while FedEx's Singapore Large Box page publishes inside dimensions that differ from the US figures by a fraction of an inch (checked September 22, 2026), so leave a little clearance rather than sizing an item to the exact number.

The Tube, at 6" x 6" x 38" (15.2 x 15.2 x 96.5 cm), is the only option longer than the 17-1/2" (44.5 cm) Large Box. Anything longer that is not a roll goes in your own box or a purchased one.

FedEx box weight limits

FedEx's US One Rate page publishes a service cap rather than a rating for each box (checked September 22, 2026). Under FedEx One Rate, a FedEx Envelope must weigh less than 10 lbs (4.5 kg) and a FedEx box, Pak or Tube less than 50 lbs (22.7 kg). Over 50 lbs, the shipment moves at standard FedEx rates based on dimensional weight and zone instead of the flat rate.

FedEx's Singapore Large Box page lists a maximum of 30 lbs (13.61 kg) for the Large Box (checked September 22, 2026). The FedEx US One Rate and packaging supplies pages do not list a per-box figure, so for a US shipment, treat the One Rate cap and the 150 lb service limit below as the numbers that apply. On standard-rated shipments, FedEx's overnight page also sets a minimum billable weight of 2 lbs (0.9 kg) for FedEx Boxes and 9 lbs (4.1 kg) for FedEx Tubes.

Maximum package size FedEx accepts

When nothing in the lineup fits, use your own box. The limits depend on the service:

• FedEx Ground and FedEx Home Delivery: up to 150 lbs (68 kg), 108 inches (274 cm) long and 165 inches (419 cm) in length plus girth.
• FedEx Express overnight services: up to 150 lbs (68 kg), 119 inches (302 cm) long and 165 inches (419 cm) in length plus girth. See what FedEx Priority Overnight is for the overnight service tiers.

Length plus girth is one number, not three. Add the length to twice the width and twice the height (L + 2W + 2H). A 30" x 20" x 20" box is 30 + 40 + 40 = 110 inches of length plus girth, comfortably inside the limit. Some size charts print the limit as "119 x 165 x 165" as if 165 inches were a side of the box. It is not, and reading it that way overstates what FedEx will accept.

For standard-rated services, FedEx bills on dimensional weight or actual weight, whichever is greater. Dimensional weight is not applied to FedEx envelopes, paks or the Small, Medium and Large boxes. Packages over 150 lbs are outside those limits. FedEx's overnight page points them to FedEx First Overnight Freight for next-day delivery, and its packing supplies page points shipments over 150 lbs to air freight boxes. FedEx 10 kg and 25 kg boxes for international shipments

FedEx also makes two double-walled boxes for FedEx International Priority, named for their flat-rate weight caps. The FedEx US One Rate and packaging supplies pages do not list them. The figures below come from FedEx Singapore's 10kg Box and 25kg Box pages (checked September 22, 2026), which publish inside dimensions:

• FedEx 10kg Box: 15.81" x 12.94" x 10.19" inside (40.16 x 32.86 x 25.88 cm), flat rate up to 10 kg (22 lbs).
• FedEx 25kg Box: 21.56" x 16.56" x 13.19" inside (54.8 x 42.1 x 33.5 cm), flat rate up to 25 kg (55 lbs).

Above the cap, FedEx adds a per-kilogram rate. If you are shipping from the US, confirm availability and pricing with FedEx before you plan around the flat rate.

Are FedEx boxes free?

Yes, with a condition. FedEx's supplies page lists envelopes, paks, poly bags, boxes and tubes as complimentary when you use expedited FedEx services, and its boxes page extends that to FedEx Express Saver and FedEx International Economy. Order online with a FedEx account, and FedEx ships the packaging to you at no charge, or pick it up at FedEx Office.

Boxes you buy at FedEx Office are a different product. FedEx Office sells standard and specialty boxes; an 8" x 8" x 8" standard box is listed at $2.00 for the box alone. Complimentary packaging is tied to the services above, so for FedEx Ground or Home Delivery plan on your own box or a purchased one. FedEx box prices under One Rate

FedEx packaging is what makes a shipment eligible for FedEx One Rate, a flat price set by package type, service and zone rather than by weight, as long as you stay under the caps above. The chart at the top of this page carries the FedEx 2Day list rate for each package, from $12.75 for a FedEx Envelope to $42.75 for an Extra Large Box or Tube, rates effective February 2, 2026 (checked September 22, 2026). FedEx 2Day and Express Saver share one price in every zone. When free FedEx boxes stop making sense at volume

For a one-off shipment on an expedited FedEx service, where the item fills a branded box and stays under the One Rate cap, the free box is the right call. That option is not available on FedEx Ground or Home Delivery. For a brand shipping every day, the question changes.

• One Rate prices the box, not the contents. A FedEx Extra Large Box costs the same flat rate whether it is full or a third full. That is a bargain for a dense item that fills the box and expensive for a light one that does not.
• Outside One Rate, size is billed. FedEx charges on dimensional weight or actual weight, whichever is greater. A branded Small, Medium or Large box is exempt from dimensional weight; your own oversized carton is not. Our dimensional weight explainer walks through the math.
• Eight fixed sizes rarely match a real SKU mix. Once a catalog spans a dozen shapes, the options are a shelf of carton sizes, custom-sized boxes, or a fulfillment partner that stocks them.
